About the Position
HME is seeking a Deckhand to support marine construction, dredging, and vessel operations. This role involves assisting with mooring, line handling, cargo operations, and general vessel maintenance aboard tugboats, dredges, workboats, and barges. The position demands physical endurance, teamwork, and a strong understanding of maritime safety procedures. Deckhands are integral to marine logistics and on-deck operations, reporting to the Deck Engineer and working closely with Captains and Crane Operators to maintain safe and efficient operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Handle mooring lines, winches, and deck gear for vessel positioning, including dredges, workboats, and barges.
- Assist with dredging, heavy marine transport, and barge operations.
- Perform routine vessel maintenance, cleaning, and inspections to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Act as a spotter for crane and heavy lift operations on marine job sites.
- Support the handling, loading, and offloading of cargo, including marine construction materials and equipment.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, maritime, and company safety protocols.
- Respond to emergencies, including spills, mechanical failures, or weather-related risks, ensuring swift mitigation.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Familiarity with marine construction, including dredging or pile-driving support.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot vessel equipment.
- Physical ability to lift heavy loads, work long shifts, and operate in challenging marine conditions.
- Ability to travel and work continuously for 7 days a week, 12 hours per day, for at least three weeks at a time.

- TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) Card
- Boater’s Card (State-Specific Requirement)
- First Aid/CPR Certification
- Welding Certifications (any agency)
Relevant Industry Training & Experience
- Experience aboard tugboats, dredges, or workboats.
- Basic rigging and line handling for marine construction support.
- Knowledge of maritime rules and emergency procedures.
- Familiarity with dredging or heavy marine transport operations.
- Welding training or experience at any level.
